What does ‘hanging up the keys’ look like for seniors in your community? How do older folks without a car and driver get around? The Provincial Working Group on Seniors’ Transportation, hosted by United Way Healthy Aging, is holding a province-wide consultation session for those in the CBSS sector to gather input and discuss how seniors and their families and friends are getting around. While the number of young people getting driver’s licenses has fallen significantly since the 1990s, the opposite is true for those 65 and over. Today, about 75% of older Canadians, the largest proportion ever, holds a licence and drives to meet their daily needs and obligations. They tend to drive until the family doctor says they have to stop. And then, on average, men outlive their driver’s license by 7 years and for women, the figure is 8.
How are seniors and their families managing the driving-cessation process where you are? What transportation alternatives does your community provide? What about rural BC? How are communities and the CBSS sector reacting to seniors’ need to get around at this time of population aging, growing income inequality, and global warming?
After a short presentation on driving/non-driving seniors and driving cessation, the Provincial Working Group on Seniors’ Transportation turns this session over to discussion. The Working Group wants to hear about your experience and also how you see others – seniors, their families, friends and others – making their way (successfully) without a car.
The Provincial Working Group on Seniors’ Transportation is hosted by United Way Healthy Aging.
Note: This Consultation session starts at 9:30 am (not 10am as indicated in the CORE newsletter).
